Abilify

Abilify (“Aripiprazole”) is one drug in a class of Atypical Anti-Psychotic drugs that were originally approved to treat major psychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia.  However, prescriptions of Atypical Anti-Psychotics have recently exploded resulting in billions of dollars of profits for drug manufacturers, as the prescription of these drugs have increased and expanded to medicate behavioral problems such as ADHD in children.  All the while, studies have linked ingestion of drugs such as Abilify to the occurrence of Type 2 Diabetes in children.  In fact, a recent study of children and youth 6-24 years of age found that the ingestion of medications such as Abilify led to a three-fold increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes in the first year of taking the drug.
