Risperdal®

Risperdal® is known as an atypical antipsychotic drug. It is approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and adolescents, bipolar disorder in adults and children ages 10-to-17, and to reduce irritability in children (5-to-16 years of age) with autistic disorder. There are also some indications that Risperdal is being increasingly used to treat ADHD. While the drug was launched on the market in 1996, its use in children was only approved in 2006.

An increasing number of Risperdal lawsuits have been filed on behalf of men and boys who developed gynecomastia, or male breast growth, alleging that the condition is due to their use of this drug, which may stimulate the production of prolactin.

The manufacturer of Risperdal, Johnson & Johnson, agreed to pay more than $2.2 billion in criminal and civil fines to settle accusations that it improperly promoted the drug to certain people, according to the Justice Department in 2013.
