Accutane

accutaneAccutane is a prescription medication, manufactured by Hoffman LaRoche, that was approved for the treatment of nodular acne, a severe type of acne that does not respond to other treatments.   However, it was also prescribed for mild acne.  Accutane contains the active ingredient Isotretinoin and goes by the generic names of Amnesteem ™, Claravis™, and Sotret®.

Hoffman La Roche sold 1.2 billion prescriptions of Accutane® annually grossing millions of dollars.  However, in 2009, after much negative press, the makers of Accutane took Accutane off the market in the U.S.  The drug company cited rising competition as its reason for removing the drug and did not credit the drug’s removal to Accutane side effects.

Accutane has been linked to several severe side effects, such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease.

Symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) vary, depending on the severity of inflammation and where it occurs.  Symptoms can include the following:

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Abdominal Cramping
  • Blood in Stool
  • Mucus in Stool
  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Severe Diarrhea
  • Excessive Bowel Movements
